Gaiety and celebrity do not always go hand in hand... but then, also, they sometimes do.
The Met Gala for 2022 took place at the beginning of May. This is always a good event to guarantee some photographs of young things showing off for the cameras. I'd thought for many years now that the annual event was something to do with the opera but no it is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
This year, Sean Mendes attended yet again but took it upon himself to wear an awful lot of form covering clothes. He walked the carpet in a Tommy Hilfiger red and navy coat. He buddied up with Austin Butler who wore an all-black ensemble by Prada. They make an attractive couple but Butler was, in fact, there with his newly trumpeted partner, Kaia Gerber. But then, who knows in those circles.
For me, however, the star turn was Manu Rios in a custom made Moschino black, sheer double-breasted lurex-brocade tuxedo with crystal embellishments. And no, it was deliberately made so you could not see what sort of undies he was wearing.
Young Manu has been making quite a stir (and a stirring) in Élite. His character, Partick, already established as being primarily gay, had a thing for a new character, Iván played by André Lamoglia. After much flirting and denial, the two eventually got it together big time.
David Brooks is a young man who is a professional footballer playing for Bournemouth. Last year, he explained to the world that he had been diagnosed with cancer - Stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma in fact. Since then, he's been receiving treatment and has, just recently, announced that he is cancer free. Yes, he looks pasty and worn out but then who wouldn't in the circumstances. Now begins a long slog to regain fitness and confidence. You've just got to wish him all the best in the world.
Jake Daniels is a young man who is also a professional footballer playing for Blackpool. He is also now the first UK top flight footballer to have come out whilst still playing the game. The wonderful thing about this story is that the Professional Footballers Association and his Club have worked together with this young man to support him through the various stages of his decision making process. They have worked with his colleagues and family and a member of the local press corps to ensure that, while this is a fairly momentous event within the world of football (and not before time it should be added), it does not explode into the national media as a story of "strife" and "calamity" and "dispute". Well done, all concerned.
Apparently, the whole process took about six months. I think it probably took them that long to clean up his social media footprint. For some poor soul, it will essentially have meant six months of trawling through the Twitter stream of a hormone-drunk teenager.
It takes me back to "Britain's first black footballers" in the 1970s - who were nothing of the sort if you look at team photographs from the 1910s and earlier. Our problem has always been visibility rather than representation. Sport, and particularly men's team sports, have been slow to challenge toxic masculinity as its components were felt to be essential in the drive to win.
Most league football clubs have LGBTQ+ supporter groups these days. I imagine the FA has wanted a gay poster boy for a while and will be supporting and nurturing. I just hope the lack of any major backlash will prompt some more senior figures in the game to follow his example.
And, yes, I'd join the queue to shag him - just for sport.
